We Believe Literacy Is A Civil Right
Research proves 95 percent of all children can learn to read if given clear and systematic instruction - yet students in wealthier communities tend to read at higher rates than their less affluent peers.
Our kids with fewer financial resources are just as capable. It’s the system that’s broken.
Black, Brown, and Indigenous students and rural students are all vastly overrepresented in 100 Oregon schools with the highest percentage of struggling readers in 2022-2023, with 75 percent or more of 3rd-5th graders were not reading at grade level.
This means that in a class of 20 students in these schools, Oregon is providing only 5 of them what they need to succeed. Every single one of these kids deserves access to life-changing literacy - and that means prioritizing them and their learning.
Oregon Kids Read is dedicated to advocating for equitable literacy policies that:
Center and prioritize students who struggle the most with reading
Ensure the instruction and tools that children need to succeed are grounded in evidence-based research about reading
Ensure our 197 school districts have what they need to support teachers and all students in an equitable way
